Two interesting facts:
1. Tierra del Fuego means Land of Fire, and is so called because of the many fires which were made by the native Indians, and which could be seen from the sea by the European explorers who first sailed here in the 1500's.
2. Ushuaia, pronounced down here as "oos-wai-a" and not "oosh-wai-a" as we had thought, is the capital of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and is the most Southerly city in the world, with a population of 64,000, and more importantly is the main gateway for tourism to Antarctica
Our journey to the most southerly city in the world was a long one.....13 hours from Puerto Natales to Ushuaia, including the 2 hours that it took to cross the border from Chile into Argentina...what a joke! The most interesting part of the journey was the crossing on the ferry over the Straight of Magellanes into Tierra del Fuego where we had beautiful black and white dolphins riding in the bow wave of the boat and many different types of sea birds flying overhead. The dolphin spotting was then followed by an unexpected salt water shower when an enormous bow wave got caught in the wind and got swept onto the deck drenching about 20 people who were watching the dolphins!
We are staying in a great little B&B which even has BBC world on the TV...a real luxury for us. Last time we watched the news was in South East Asia in November! Today we once again met up, amidst much excitement, with Christian and Sylvia, our Austrian friends. We also took a trip to the duty free shops which are abound here to buy chocolate and alcohol....namely Lindt Swiss Chocolate, nice wine, and Amarulla.....too good an opportunity to pass up I'm afraid, as it will be nice to have a few nice treats when we are aboard the ship on our ANTARCTIC CRUISE!!!! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we have secured ourselves two tickets on an 11 day cruise leaving tomorrow, and I cannot tell you HOW EXCITED we are!!!! This is a dream come true for us and I only hope it lives up to all our expectations so that we will not become bankrupt for nothing!!
Anyway, must go, better start packing the thermal pants....see you all in 11 days....
We're off to ANTARCTICA......................................
