Where I stayed
Day : 262
Temperature : 15 degrees
Weather : Very mixed
We have had a fantastic two more days of riding in the estancia. Paola, Kev and I, along with our horses, plus an extra horse packed with picnic gear and food for the Puesto, headed out around 10 am. We had the same horses as yesterday. I was given the lovely Tordo and Kevin had Blancita. We passed through beautiful countryside with the lake to our left and the mountains in the distance. The weather was fantastic on our first day. After a few hours we stopped for lunch, just in time before my legs became permanently stuck in a very unattractive bow legged, bent position
We continued on, climbing up hill slightly, until we could see the mountains of Torres del Paine in the distance. We finally reached the Puesto, which is essentially a basic hut which the gauchos use when looking after the animals. There is a room for sleeping and another which has a wood burning cooker which also provides heat, a small sink for washing up, and a small table with stools around it. After tying up our horses and bringing all the kit into the Puesto Kevin and I shuffled our way in and tried to maneouvre and bend our bodies so as to be able to sit down...this was proving quite difficult after 5 hours on our horses. Paola, however, was obviously used to this kind of day and merrily went about cooking us a lovely, filling meal which we then ate around the cooker before retiring to bed about 10.30pm.
The following day, Paola was up and about way before us and she had gathered the horses and saddled them up. I think by now Tordo was possibly recognising me...although I'm not quite sure if he was pleased to see me or rather thinking...."ah gawd...not HER again!"....it's difficult to tell
After a breakfast of tea and coffee, porridge, bread and Manjar / Dulce de leche, which I am fast becoming addicted to, we set off to head back to the estancia. The horses were definitely a little more enthusiastic about going home to see their friends. We however, were not so enthusiastic about the weather which was really looking bad, and we were preparing for a day of rain. Thankfully, it didn't come to much and we had a virtually dry ride all the way back. Once again we stopped for lunch, this time by the lake with the mountains in the distance. When we reached the estancia mid afternoon I was definitely feeling muscles which I hadn't used in a long time, but a hot shower soon made a big difference.
Kev and I were by now feeling very lazy, and for our last night Paola cooked us a delicious 3 course meal with wine....a real treat! I could have stayed here forever..........................
