We had a really, really, really long day yesterday. We motored up the east coast as long as we could, finally stopping when we couldn't take it any more. We'd travelled all the way up past Christchurch and nearly made it to Kaikoura. Kev was exhausted. When we finally decided to call it a day there suddenly seemed to be no appropriate places to park up for the night. We eventually found, after an hour of searching, a parking area well off the main road, next to the railway line. Well, this wouldn't be a problem, there would surely be no trains at night
It didn't take us long to make it up to Blenheim. We stopped only to take pictures of a sea colony on some rocks by the side of the road. We decided to park at a holiday camp so that we could do some proper laundry and give Harold another good clean. More importantly, we were going to visit a winery for lunch, and we weren't confident that either of us would be in a fit state to drive within 12 hours of this particular outing.
At first the though of hiring bicycles for the afternoon seemed ideal
We finally arrived (about an hour later than we'd planned) at the Hunters Winery. We locked up our bikes and waddled into the restaurant. Just to complement the waddling look, my hair was soaking with sweat and flatly smeared across my forehead (as a result of the compulsory helmet), and my makeup was not quite in the same condition as when I'd applied it. Kev, somehow managed to look just as he had done when we set off.
We had a very nice, relaxed lunch outdoors in the restaurant's garden. For our first drink Kev chose a Chardonnay which was nice, and I chose a Rose which was actually a very dark colour and neither of us liked it much. We then moved on to Shiraz which was ok, but not wow! Kev then decided to finish of my Rose and by now he thought it was tasting much better than before! I disagreed! To accompany dessert we moved on to a Muscat which was very rich and very strong and very sweet.
We weren't in the best state (mentally or physically) to cycle back. It took us twice as long as we were both now feeling very tired, very heavy and a little wobbly. Fortunately, it was a glorious day and we spent the evening much like the sea lions that we have seen recently....basking in the sunshine and unable to move.
