So here we are onto the next section of our journey, on the beautiful island of Bali. Before we move on to Bali let's talk about Java. The scenery in Java is absolutely outstanding and Java has definitely been a highlight of our trip so far. From the incredible lunar landscapes of Bromo and Ijen, to the enchanting temples of Borodobur, and the endless green paddy fields with tall swaying palm trees….absolutely spectacular. We enjoyed the chilled out feel of Yogyakarta, with funky cafes, live bands and excellent food. However, we won’t miss the constant battle and effort when it comes to transport. Dubious touts are everywhere and will tell you anything to get your business, often at 5 times the normal price. Sometimes arriving at a bus or train station feels like running the gauntlet as you are swooped upon from all angles! Being dropped off in the middle of nowhere, taken to false bus terminals, and being told the museum / temple / hotel that you want to go to is shut is infuriating. Constantly having to be on your guard and having to be aware of what’s going on around you finally starts to wear you down, and it’s very, very tiring in the end. It’s hard not to be suspicious of everybody as they all seem to want a piece of you. Despite this, Java has been truly exceptional and we are so glad that we went there….we would 100% recommend it to everyone.

Currently we are enjoying the relaxed little resort of Lovina on the northern coast of Bali. We are staying in a lovely little hotel with our own balcony and we have views over the palm trees to the sea. We have a huge bedroom, a huge wet room style bathroom, hot water and a fan….all for approximately 7.50 per night including breakfast. Not bad huh? The beach area is nothing special. It has grey / black volcanic sand, but it’s wide with plenty of shade and pleasant enough. The water however, was fine yesterday, but today it has a film of yellow-brown scum on it….very unpleasant, hence we haven’t been in the water. We did notice a couple of very dirty canals / streams which empty out onto the beach, and I suspect this is where the dirty water is coming from.  The food in Lovina is very good on the whole, and after a week of living on Bourbonne biscuits and fried noodles, the fresh green salads, couscous, grilled aubergines and goats cheese and many other mouth-watering dishes have most definitely gone down a treat! All this comes at a price however…this is much more expensive than Java….but since there seems to be no "cheap" places to eat, we might as well fill up on the good stuff and enjoy it!

Tomorrow we are heading south through the mountains to the town of Ubud where we will be staying for Kevin’s birthday on the 11th…but ssshhhh, don’t tell anyone, you know Kevin doesn’t like a fuss!!

PS Sorry about all the posing sunset photos but we started using our flash that we've been lugging around for 3 months and needed some practice! ;-P
