I had my last rollerskating lesson today. I admit it's been really really fun and my teachers were commenting on how much I had learned in such a short amount of time. Elfie the main teacher had me focusing on specific skills, which would help me w/ rollerderby. Turns, skating backwards, crouching, skating quickly and stopping quickly. There is still much I'm sure I will need to work on when I get back but I'm pretty good at falling already. I managed to make it through all those lessons w/out killing myself!!!, knock on wood:-) The ladies were competing that weekend in freeskate and artistic dance. I would of like to have gone as many of the people at the lessons skate in a group called the pacemakers:-) Pretty funny name and unfortunately I didn't make the competition...
On Friday night I met up w/ my friend Claire for a couple of drinks out back of the record shop she works at in St. Kilda. I ended up talking a bit to her friend Richard who had just been in Texas a couple of weeks prior for the South by Southwest music fest. Another festival I would love to attend. Anywho, he had attended a rollerderby match outside Austin and said I looked way too nice for rollerderby. Apparently, there in Texas rollerderby is pretty full on w/ very very big and tough looking women kicking some major ass. They even skate on a ramped rink like proper rollerderby. He was pretty interested by the fact that rollerderby seems to be about to take off pretty huge in the states w/ the forming of a National League soon if it hasn't happened already. Anywho, just another area of pop culture phenomenon where something is big for a while disappears of the make and then makes a comeback in a big way:-) I'm excited, as I'll be back for the MadRollinDolls championship bout, which happens May 22nd.
