Where I stayed
On our agenda today was a cruise on the Lu-Lu Belle, "the limousine of Prince William Sound," to the Columbia Glacier to rub noses with icebergs and see lots of wildlife.
We were told that the Lu-Lu Belle is Alaska's most plush tour vessel and considered a "luxury yacht." We were expecting much more opulence than we encountered when we stepped aboard. Yes, it as a well-kept 75-foot vessel, with teak and mahogany accents and oriental rugs, but if we slapped an oriental rug on the Nock-Nock, we could claim the same.
There was a nice snack bar aboard with booth seating. Two female deck hands cooked chili dogs, clam chowder, popcorn and other reasonably priced snacks
Even though the atmosphere was not what we expected, we were not disappointed with the promised sights. They were awesome! We experienced Alaska's wilderness, Prince William Sound's majestic glaciers, Valdez's busy harbor and the terminus of the world famous TransAlaska Oil Pipe Line. Captain Fred Rodolf shared his wealth of knowledge of and enthusisam for Prince William Sound and it's ecosystem, gained from 30 years of experience on these waters, with lively narration. The only trouble was, he talked and talked and talked, and after a while, I think we were all wishing he would put a sock in it!
On the way back to port, Art and I played cards with Charles as his wife, Julie, looked on.
It was a magnificent day (at least 7 hours) with our Gulfstreamer friends with sights of otters, puffin, a humpback whale, porpoise, sea lions, eagles, salmon, glaciers, icebergs, mountains, waterfalls, fishing boats and more.
