July 6

We travel only 88 miles today. The stretch of highway between Lake Louise and Jasper is called the Icefields Parkway, and it is one of the most scenic drives in North America, transversing Alberta's Banff and Jasper national parks in the central Canadian Rockies.  It is overcast and we have spotty rain showers.

Our Tailgunner, Richard, told us to be sure to stop at the Bridal Veil Falls lookout.  It was a tall waterfall cascading from the mountains.  Art heard the rumbling of more water somewhere that couldn’t be seen, so we decided to trek a little off the beaten path. We discovered a thundering glacial runoff that had formed a gorge in the rocks.  We constantly reminded each other to be sure of our footing so that we didn’t tumble over the edge.

We will camp at the Icefield Centre which has no hookups, but who needs that when you can view a glacier outside your window?  Actually, dry camping is not difficult for us since we have plenty of water and a generator.

Most of the group is planning to take a SnoCoach tour.  A SnoCoach is like a bus with monster truck tires that transports visitors onto the glacier.  We opted to skip this activity.  We just couldn’t see paying $40 each to walk on ice and look for ice worms.  Yeah, I know, you’re all calling us idiots for passing up the opportunity, but we just didn’t see much merit in this particular tour.

Instead, we stayed behind and visited the Icefield Centre which features interpretive displays about the Columbia Icefield.  The glaciers that are visible from our perspective are fingers of the giant Columbia Icefield, which covers 241 square miles.

We enjoyed lunch in the motorhome and snuggled for a while.  It’s chilly here – duh, we’re parked by a glacier – about 51 degrees, and the spotting rain turned into a deluge just as the others embarked on their SnoCoach adventure.
