I was hoping to go to L'viv in Ukraine for the weekend but it turned out to be more trouble than it was worth, so instead i took little nephew to Krakow for the day.  Not exactly a shitty second choice!  The drive across the SK/PL border is the highlight of the trip - there is one big hill, and the road switchbacks all the way up, and then all the way down.  Each bend is a super sharp 355degree turn, and 5mph, or alternatively tumble down the hill.  Dotted along the road are huge Stork Nests perched atop telegraph poles.  A couple of nests had a watchful Stork ready to pounce and peck my eyes out, but luckily i don't think i looked too much like a fish that day!  The night before, a told someone that i'd like to go to Auschwitz as i knew it was in the Krakow area.  15km west of Krakow she told me. 15! Now, she is Slovak and I am English, we were speaking in French, but she definately said 15, not bloody 50km!!!  So, eventually we get to Auschwitz-Birkenau.  the first few moments were very difficult, seeing the Train Tracks going thru the main gate, and the countless number of watchtowers.  I tried to read the plagues to my nephew but actually found it very difficult to get the words out, which i did not expect.  Leading up to our arrival, Ashley really didnt want to go, and rightly or wrongly i did kinda force him.  But, to his credit, he was very mature about it all, asked sensible questions, and was very respectful.  One thing that did shock me was how rude some people were!  One group of about 12 poles, about 18 years old were running amock, smoking, laughing, shouting - just generally being wankers after i had spent about 1 hours explaining to ashley how he should behave.  Anyway, a very moving place, especially the dorms with the rows after rows of bunks.  One thing which a couple of people have also mentioned to me.... the place is in the middle of lush green area, trees, etc, and there is not a single piece of wildlife - no birds singing, no insects bugging you, nothing! Very Eery!

After that, it was a 50KM!!! drive back to Krakow centre.  I love krakow, there is always something going on in the square (albeit last time it was just a lot of drinking).  This time, we walked around the old town perimeter park, to the castle and back to the main square for dinner.  Ashley scales the enormous (small) climing wall, while i fell in love with the waitress! Then, late at night, we returned to Bardejov, and got to do some midnight driving up the scary hill!
