We spent several days exploring  Everglades National Park.  Our perception of the Everglades changed considerably after hiking several trails and taking guided walks and bike ride.  We learned the Everglades is made up of Prairie Sawgrass, hardwood hammocks, Slash pine stands, Bald cypress forest and and mangroves.

The ecosystem changes from summer to winter because of  fluctuating water levels in the Sawgrass prairie. This time of year it is normally quite dry,  but because of heavy rain last month, there is more water than normal in the Everglades. There  were no mosquitoes; they arrive with a vengence in July.

The negative impact people have had on the Everglades is mainly due to interrupted natural water flows. Dikes, dams and canals have been constructed to divert water during floods and drain areas for farmland. Originally, 80 % of the water from central Florida flowed through the Everglades, now it is 20 %.  The goal is to reverse this trend and there are several initiatives underway to improve the situation.

Joy on

Hi Gail - love your pics. did you like the taste of Passion fruit???

It's one of my favourite flavours! As a kid, when Mum made cupcakes, and wanted passionfruit icing, I'd have to go out to our Passion fruit vine and pick up any ripe ones from the ground. Mum would put it in the icing sugar instead of any other liquid. WONDERFUl!! I especially love passionfruit icecream!! and by this time next week, I'll have already had some - Yahooooooooo! Joy
PS - Superstore (President's choice, brand) had Passionfruit Pop in cans, a few months back - SO delicious!!!!1
