Happy New Year from the COLD USA!
This is turning out to be an odd holiday for us.The weather in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl Parade was great. The day after the parade, when we went to view the floats, it was 76 ' F, so SUMMER. We liked Pasadena, and could have spent a week there. We just took in the parade and floats, doing very little else, other than walk the area. Maybe we'll make it back another time when the hotel rates aren't $220/night!
We did get to have dinner with our Ohio friends who were there to see the Buckeyes win the football game! They met us at a great seafood place just up the street from our Pasadena Saga Hotel. We hadn't seen them in a couple of years, so it was nice to have a little visit. Unfortunately, during our Pasadena stay, we received an urgent email message
from our Florida friend, Naomi, that she would have to go to Mexico City when we were planning to visit her in Fort Lauderdale, because her sister was ill
The train trip to San Antonio was very nice.
Our closet roomette was comfortable and the food delicious. The scenery was no heck, but the ride was relaxing. Unfortunately, when we checked into our historic Crockett Hotel (as in Davie Crockett), we discovered the city drains the river along the famous Riverwalk between Jan. 3-12 for cleaning and maintainance! Fortunately, we like to walk new neighbourhoods, so just did the tourist route anyway, discovering historic areas, little arty shops, and beautiful architecture along the way. Unfortunately, we must have brought the "Alberta Clipper" with us, as San Antonio experienced its coldest winter in 25 years! Fortunately, we had brought toques, gloves, long silk underwear, and fleece jackets, so were warm enough. It just wasn't pleasant! We spent two days and 12 hours in the amazing San Antonio Museum of Art, toured the Alamo and watched an IMAX film of the Alamo events, rode the cute trolleys around the historic downtown, and enjoyed some good meals. Gail even went to the San Antonio Calligraphy Guild's January meeting, which she enjoyed. She even got to join 8 members for dinner at a local eatery after the meeting, so had a good time. We could have spent several more days in San Antonio, but, we'll just have to come back
Today, we had an early flight to Florida, where we thought we'd have some warmer weather. Unfortunately, they, too, are experiencing extremely low temperatures! It was raining, windy, cloudy, and cold when we landed, and it hasn't improved all afternoon; the forecast is for -6 ' C tonight, so it's not good! They are worried about orange crops, and the Salvation Army was setting up emergency warming rooms. The weather reporter was warning people about the windchill temperatures. We will go to the art gallery tomorrow (a special showing of Norman Rockwell paintings is featured this month) and hope the temperatures improve.
Hope you are having a good start to 2010.
