Where I stayed
We had a hotel breakfast, lots of different things long life wrapped in plastic, in our rooms.
We intend to make an early start, but today we are thwarted by an overindulgence of jalapenos yesterday. Why on earth Noah and I ate them, after the fibre overdose at Cafe Gratitude – I will never know. We learnt our lesson the hard way. It took a while for us to be ready for today's road trip and the Mothership has christened us the ‘toilet dwellers’. Thank you Mum, we appreciate your sympathy in our time of need... Noah puts Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire on the iPod to cheer us on our way.
We go to the supermarket and stock up on wine and snacks and then head down to the beach
At the seafront , Elwood had a good run around. It was quite cold, and there were quite a few people sleeping rough nearby. Not sure if homelessness is a bigger problem in beachside areas, or if it is just more visible. But every time we have been to beaches on the west coast it has seemed like homelessness is quite a big problem. I feel quite awkward surround by so much homelessness. Part of me feels protective of Elwood , although no one has paid us any attention but I feel he is sometimes interested in them, and I feel like he is going to ask questions soon about why they are going through the bins. Next, I feel guilty and embarrassed for feeling unfriendly. And straight after that I feel desperately sad, and I think about the day Elwood was born and how very much I loved him straight away and how overnight he was the centre of our universe. When I think of these people doing it tough on the street are somebody’s children, that is when I feel the saddest.
We headed over to a lovely ‘Shipwreck’ themed park Elwood climbed and jumped from all the dangerously high things, and then we played Cafe’s , one of Elwood’s favourite games
We then jump in the car, and head inland to join the highway to go north. The roads are mountainous and the view is gorgeous. Because we have only had each other’s company for a while, and no longer know how to behave in an age appropriate way, we listen to Taylor Swift. And, we sing along with gusto. Seriously, I am not sure how we are going to fit back into society.
I hadn't realised but Noah was secretly panicking about the fuel situation in the car. We had a quarter of a tank when we left, but quickly drove into the mountains, so gas stations are few and very far between. As luck would have it, one appeared as if by magic. We also took this opportunity to make our lunch so we set up a sandwich production line on the car bonnet in the sun's brief glow (and kind of near the bins). I studiously avoided the jalapeņo salsa. Noah didn't - he's obviously doolally.
We take a break at San Simeon where there were Sea Lions playing in the water and sleeping on the beach. Elwood was disappointed at first, as he was expecting them to roar
Back in the car, Elwood dosed off and we continued along Highway 1 – the coast road. Every moment of the drive was breath taking – just like in the movies. It's that very winding road, with the steep drop and ocean on one side and rock face on the other side. At Noah’s request we listened to The T(h)rills singing about the places we have been and the places we are heading. Good call, Noah.
The road wound through Big Sur, and so many other gorgeous places that I would love to go back to and spend some time. I need to think of careers for us which mean we can properly travel every year. It feels like the life for us. We love it.
Day turned to night in one heart beat. Once it was dark and there was no view to admire, the journey seemed to drag and drag. So we stop and buy chocolate to see us through the last leg of the journey.
We reach Monterey around 8pm. Elwood gets a brief 2nd wind, and we play a quick round of every game he can think off. He soon runs out of batteries, as does the Mothership.
Noah and I catch up on some emails, book our next few nights of accommodation, and plan tomorrow and try and stay awake.
Good night lovely people
