Set high up on a mountain top, San Marino is not quite what we expected - no grandeur, just the usual McDonalds and Renault garages - that is until you hit the top. What a staggering change, beauty personified with breathtaking views, and a quaint if not relatively new fortification surrounding it. With cobbled streets around every corner and views stretching for miles, this is simply a place of tranquillity.

This would be our last day with Jo and Dan before they begin their way home - all be it still six weeks away, but they are taking a different route than us! All in all we think we have spent almost a month in their company, and the memories of our times together will last a lot longer.

We ventured round the cobbled streets at a less than slow pace as we eyed up the various shops, cafes, and market stalls, enjoying the considerably lower prices than in Venice - not a hard thing to do on reflection. We took our lunch of peanut butter sandwiches and gazed out at the views as the sun shone - what more a person could ask for I have no idea. Then began the descent from the charming tower, of which there are three to the base of the town, via some very helpful lifts, as the strain up was enough for the day! We then caught the campsite bus back home for the evening.

As the sun set we drank a few beers before beginning our now customary game of Canasta, before eventually getting to bed in the early hours - although it was worth it as I won (as usual).
