We have now learnt the lesson about reserving seats on the intercity express trains. The train was quite crowded and all seats were already reserved. We decided to use some seats that weren't in use on the 1st few legs and a luck would have it, the people who reserved them never showed up. We must be all out of luck by now!
The overwhelming noise and crowds in Hamburg on Saturday was totally unexpected. The station was packed and the streets just as much. Helicopters were flying in the air, streets were blocked, camera crews were everywhere and it looked a bit like a carnival! Eventually we worked out that a world championship triathelon event is taking place over the 3 days that we are here

. [Funnily enough, in Berlin we met a couple of young girls that had been in Hamburg competing in the event and they were from Canberra.]
A bit of further exploration shows us to be just on the edge of the 'seedy' part with sex shops and friendly girls within arms reach. In fact we can see a nice girl looking to make friends from our window. Karen has a new hobby - street corner watching
Some observations about Germany from experiences so far:
1. Everyone drinks beer - no exceptions.
2. Smoking is the national past-time.
3. Dogs are like people and go where they want - into shops, on trains ... and even into many restaurants!
4. Bras are optional.
