Got into Cairns in tropical northern Queensland Saturdays night. Checked into our hotel and wandered around town to find some dinner. Cairns is a popular tourist town and also full of backpackers and VW buses. It has a great downtown and excellent boardwalk, even if there's no beach and you can't go into the ocean because it is infested with man eating salt-water crocs. Got to love Australia, where death seems to be lurking in every patch of water...Anyways, dinner was great, but it was even better when it turned into a salsa/disco club. Probably drank a bit too much wine, but you should of seen this old guy groove. Sunday was a beach day. Headed up north to the beaches and just laid around for a bit. The weather up here is quite a bit warmer than the southern parts of the state. Of course, we are in the tropical rainforest (rainbow lorikeets greet you as you get off the airplane). Sunday night we did a little shopping at the night markets and then got to bed fairly early.
Today we were up and out to sea. We had a full day trip to the great barrier reef. The water is absolutely stunning. We were able to do a snorkeling tour and a journey in a glass bottomed boat (like the scene in "The Life Aquatic"). We saw some sea turtles, sea cucumbers, giant clams and thousands of other fish of all sizes and colors. The coral is amazing, like an underwater forest. No sharks, but Nick took a half hour intro diving class and saw the Clown Fish (Nemo) and even got to touch it. Kara thought about diving, but then decided to pass. I thought the dive was great, but it took a bit getting use to the fact that your over 25 feet underwater.
Hope to have some pics up in the next day or two. The free internet at the hotel isn't high speed. Going up to explore the rainforest in the morning. Nothing like seeing two World Heritege Sites in two days. Cheers-nk and kk Visit Klenske, Ink. More thumbnails ...
