Still here in Surfer's Paradise, in the middle of Australia's Gold Coast. Wednesday morning we hiked a couple of miles down the beach to Sea World. Here we got to see a shark/reef aquarium, a dolphin show, some seals and polar bears (not native to Australia) and ride a no-wait roller coaster. That evening we relaxed on the beach a bit before heading out for some excellent Thai food. After dinner we went to an Irish pub to sample some of that famous Aussie beer. While there a backpacker pub crawl made there way through, which filled the place for a good hour. They even competed in some pub games which were, shall we say, very sexually explicit...
Today we spent a good part of the day relaxing around the hotel, trying to fully recover from jet lag. Did a bit of laundry and Kara beat me in a hard fought (and long) game of pool. We then enjoyed a nice lunch in our room, taking in the ocean view. This afternoon we both tried our hands at surfing by taking a lesson at the local surf school. They guaranteed us that we would stand during our first lesson. Although there is no picture of Nick standing, he did stand...once. Nonetheless, it was a fun afternoon and Kara and I decided to both quit the jobs we have yet to start and pursue a professional surfing carreer, or maybe just open a surf school in Iowa: Mississippi Surf School. Hey, if we can grow grapes and make wine, why not surf?
Heading North to Brisbane in the morning in search of one of those drop bears (Koalas).
