Leaving LA was tougher than I imagined. I woke up this morning staring at the Pacific in Manhattan Beach. I won't forget that visual for a while. There was the final clean of the apartment and awkward handshake with my Kiwi Queen landlord. I wrestled with the Yakima cargo carrier for a couple hours, finally got it mounted, loaded the car and hit the road around 1pm.
I've done this drive from LA to the bay too many times to count but this one has an entirely different feel to it. I feel more connected with the other drivers, the travelers, than usual. I realize that I have about as much knowledge about my upcoming journey as I do about theirs. I look around at the mounted bikes and stuffed suitcases pressed against back windows and think about all places we're heading... and leaving behind.
I arrive in Sacramento around 8pm, greeted by my Dad. Kaya and his dogs get along just fine, in fact they mostly ignore each other. We share a beer, rap for an hour then I'm off to bed. For all the ass-sitting you do while driving, it's somehow tiring.
Oh, on the way up here I made a couple decisions about the rest of this trip: no more than 4 hours driving at a time and no driving at night.
