Finally made it to Budapest after a whirlwind trip from Australia. Three legs on a plane and a bloody long train ride, and I've met up with Dad and his partner Marta at their house on the hill in Budapest.

Thank God for the solitaire game on the iPod mini, is all I can say.

The train ride was great. Eastern Europe is perhaps the only place in the world where there are signs up in the dining car saying you can smoke, but you can't use your mobile phone. Priorities!

Went to the food market today to have a stickybeak, and they've got the most amazing array of strange foods. Tripe was at every butchery, which to be honest looks like a mouldy Chux superwipe. And it turns out the best fish in Hungary, which is landlocked and only has a freshwater lake, is overgrown goldfish, or carp, to connisseurs. I think I'll be giving the omega-3s the flick for the next three months if it only comes in the form of a childhood pet!

Hungarian is the most amazingly difficult language. Apparently, it's not related to any other language in Europe, which makes a mystery of where these people come from. They have an entire range of noises that make up the language that I can't even begin to get my head around, let alone my vocal chords. My friend David spent an hour tonight teaching me the different sounds of the alphabet - there are four pronunciations for the letter "o" alone! Which doesn't matter so much, considering they're not much in love with vowels. In the end, I just asked him to write down the words for "soy milk" to help me conquer my lactose problem in the local cafes. Which he did quite gingerly before saying that I would never find a cafe with soy option :)

No other adventures to tell of as yet - but be assured friends, while missing you all, I'm having a blast.

xx Nic
