well i finally finally (13 dives and an outrageous part of my total budget later!) made if off ko lanta and have arrived here in khao lak, via phuket. the weather here isnt nearly as nice as its been on ko lanta, its still roasters mctoasters but pretty overcast so not real sitting on the beach kind of weather.
i left ko lanta at ludicrous o'clock yesterday, up at half 6, in a taxi by just after 7 and on the ferry by 8. we went via phi phi where we had to change boats but yet again i failed in my quest to spy the Beach-beach. by all accounts its totally not worth it anymore as its so so overrun with tourist boats but still it wouldve been good to have just seen it. anyhoo! the ferry journey itself wasnt too bad or long and i was in phuket by about 11 where i didnt even stop to eat, just jumped on a local bus up here to khao lak. the journey was somewhat nail-biting due to the bus drivers chain smoking and serial mobile phone conversations (swapping hands to change up and down gears). he also wove from lane to lane, also carefully utilising the hard shoulder for those sharper bends that required more space seeing as he didnt brake below 80mph at any point!!! but i made it here alive and have checked into the accommodation part of the khao lak seafood place. its not as cheap as ko lanta but the room is way way nicer with tiles and clean sheets. only downside is there is no mossie net and i have been savaged from the moment i got here, particularly on my feet yet again.
last night i just went to a small restaurant next door where i ordered the glass noodle salad, little realising its main ingredient is 2 full chilis of the local variety (fresh from the market). i can safely say that even after 3 months in india it was defo the most hottest spicy thing ive ever eaten. i was sweating profusely, my eyes were pouring with tears. every time i tried to lick my lips to cool them down it just made it worse and i even made the dreadful DREADFUL schoolboy error of wiping my lips with my hands and then by mistake rubbish my eye. it wasnt a good dining experience (although the owner did note the sorry state of me and gave me a replace chili-free salad)!
ive also booked myself on a liveaboardtrip to the similan islands. we leave tomorrow evening and theres 3 night and 3 days on the boat with 9 dives (including 1 or 2 night dives). there was an option for a 4 day/night one too that included the surin islands and richileu rock (which reminded me of dogtanian and i kept laughing under my breath when they said it) but it was another E100 and i desperately need to reign in my spending habits! we have twin cabins and they have hot showers and a BBQ on the last night so im really looking forward to that. then the day after i come back ive to do a visa run up to burma which is a pain but a necessity and then the day after im heading over to ko phangan for the full moon party. having a nightmare trying to sort accommodation for that, everywhere either doesnt take bookings or wants you to stay a minimum of 7 nights. but i really dont want to rock up with 11,000 other punters so ill have to keep on persevering.
some thoughts on thailand - well the main thing right now is boys and girls. ive got to the point where i dont believe any girl working behind a bar is a girl anymore. (in many cases its not and its just so hard to tell.) it also really puzzles me as to how come thailand has such a high concentration of blokes who want to be girls. why is it not the same in all the other countries, i mean its not even anywhere close?! are loads of boys in every other country in the world living in denial or is there something in the water in thailand - its weird. its also weird that its mostly old western men that you see with young thai girls but hardly pretty much no older western women with thai men - why is that? its a funny place thailand. maybe ive been to the wrong places but so far ive been laughed at quite alot (no smart responses to that please!!!) and ive not found it particularly friendly - its light years away from india where the friendliness of people could at times get on your nerves. anyway thats my thoughts for the day.
going to TRY to put up some pics now - for those of you on facebook this is a subset of the pics up there. if you want to see them the link is http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=106670&l=0a4a5&id=553535575 but im pretty sure you need a facebook account to see them.
anyway more when i get back from the similans/burma. hope youre all well. xx
ps yet another PC where the active x installer for the photo uploader wont work so you have to use the crappy one which takes hours so no pics going up here im afraid, youll have to check out the facebook ones. sorry.
