After the shock of the altitude episode in Potosi, I was very grateful to reach the much lower town of Tupiza, at an altitude of about 2,800m. The whole reason for coming here, other than my head not exploding, was that you can take an alternative Salt Flat tour starting in Tupiza and ending in Uyuini. It is more expensive to take this route but we had heard good things about it, and our options were pretty limited by now.

Once we had booked in with Tupiza Tours, we had a day to spend exploring beautiful Tupiza. Its a really small town set in the most increadible landscape. We had been told the best way to explore was on horseback. After our last horse riding experience we made sure we explained we had no experience with horses and we absolutely needed a guide. We paid for a 3 hours trip at an extortionate price of about 3.50 pounds each, and set of feeling a little bit like cowboys of to explore the rugged wild west.

The scenery was absolutely out of this world. We really did feel like we were straight out of a cowboy movie. This infact is the area of the world that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid spent their time!! Real cowboys we were!!

We were soon (sort of) getting to grips with the horses and even managed to gallop a few times. Not sure about the trotting, that kills your arse!!! We gallop expertly by a huge wall of rock with a huge chunk missing, locally known as the Devils Gate. On past the Devils Gate you enter into the Inca Canyon. The walls of the Canyon rise above you nearly as far as you can see, stretching into the blue sky. James hiked up into the Canyon a bit while I tried to make friends with the horses. I donīt think they were too bothered by me...bloody tourists!!

It really was an amazing experience. I will be back on a horse as soon as I can. Just not sure if the scenery will ever be matched!!
