At 8.30 AM we leave our motel in Kriens and continue our trip to Livorno. We have to be there tonight at 8 PM to board the ferry. We stop at a road side restaurant to have breakfast and to buy some bread for lunch.

In Italy there is no "vignette" for the highways but you pay at toll booths. Because we have enough time, we decide to take the smaller roads. This way we don't have to pay the toll and we see more of the country.

Between Pisa and La Spezia we drive through a mountain range and there is nothing there. No inhabitants, no village and more important since we are in dire need of diesel: no gas stations! When we finally find one (the most expensive one we've seen in Italy so far ...) we are very relieved that we made it and judging by the number of liters that go in our tank, we've made it only just.

We arrive a little early in the port of Livorno and have to wait another hour before boarding the ferry. At a little after 8pm we are allowed on board and shown to our parking place. We take all of our luggage for the night since we are not allowed in the holds anymore. We are assigned a cabin and put our luggage in it. Although hiring a cabin for the night is a very convenient solution, it certainly is not a very 'clean' solution! You can eat off the floor (there are enough remnants from previous visitors ...), you have to take a shower while holding your breath because there is a pungent smell of mould. The sheets are clean but don't lift the mattress! You never know what you will find underneath.

We have our dinner in the on board restaurant. Because only very few people opted for a night cabin, the choices in the restaurant are limited. We have 2 schnitzels, 1 beer and 1 water and pay 25 euros. And the taste? It was food and with that all is said ...

After a stroll on the deck we decide to call it an early night. There is nothing else to do. Once boarded, you are not allowed to go off the ship so a walk in the town of Livorno is not possible.
