It was an easy downhill run from the park to the town of Alta Gracia, apart from a climb in the middle back up to 1200m where there was an observatory. Reading the relevant part of my guidebook when I got down to the town revealed that this observatory can be visited. Top tip: always read your guidebook before visiting a place, rather than afterwards.

Alta Gracia was a pretty town, host to a sixteenth-century Jesuit estate, and several old colonial houses, including the childhood home of Che Guevara, now a very interesting musuem. Exhibited therein was the bicycle he used on his first trip (before the motorcycle diaries one), through Northern Argentina at the age of 22. Was this a coincidence, or was it a sign that I would start nurturing Marxist sentiments and return home with a resolve to lead a revolution on a Caribbean island?

Beard status: I need to face facts: I'm unlikely to achieve the king of beards, an Isambard Kingdom Brunel, in a mere eight weeks. Might it even be time for a tidyup?

don't give in!
Come on Nigel, keep growing that beard! You won't look like a proper wizened traveller who has learned from his experiences unless you can stroke your Merlin-like beard majestically as you ponder the dangers of diahorreoa and steep hills. Also, it's fun to see how much hair you can grow on your face, as you see to be going bald in some photos. Hee hee.

More beard, less bowel movements
I agree with the aforementioned: KEEP THE BEARD! Just think of the many notables in whose distinguished company you will be once you have a fully fledged fuzzy mass on your chin: Renoir, Brahms, Karl Marx, Sean Connery and, of course, David Blunkett (although maybe he only has one because he can't see what it looks like). I continue to be proud to have you as a friend on such a mighty expedition, but my support could easily be lavished upon someone else should you chose to disregard my opinion in this matter. Bisou x
