The Golden Gate Bridge! Alcatraz! Cable Cars! Nob Hill! Famous Car Chases! Gay capital of the US! Californ-I-A! How wonderful to be back in my favourite North American city.

Not really of course - this was San Francisco Del Monte De Oro, not half so exciting, I´m sorry to say, despite the presence of gold in the name (oro) and, presumably, in the surrounding hills, too. I stuck around for a day to try and deal with some important paperwork (groan) connected with my impending job (yes, I have one!) that against all the odds had managed to find its way to me in the midsts of Argentina via wonderful parents, but a decidely shaky-on-its-feet internet connection scuppered all my attempts at efficiency.

On the way to the town, however, I had come across a big arena with a load of guys riding around it on horses. An couple of Argentinian couples whose female elements were linked by sisterhood were also having a snoop around and explained that it was some sort of patriotic monument, pointing out the Argentian flag flying proudly from a long pole high above our heads. I did the usual routine with them - I explain my trip (I´ve got the spiel nailed to a post good and proper by now), women react with exaggerated (or possibly not) astonishment, men smile in a "good on you" kind of way (more masculine version of astonishment, perhaps). After this, the couples desired to undergo the customary parting gestures, which involved the ladies coming and giving me a kiss on the cheek. Now, I was genuinely touched by this warm gesture, but at the same time, I hadn´t had a shower for several days by now and I was genuinely concerned for their health should they approach too closely. Still, too bad - I couldn´t recall the word for "smell" to warn them, so: Ħque sera´, sera´!

Most useful Spanish word forgotten: "mal odor", dirty git.
Miles munched: 40

P.S. San Francisco, though disappointing, did offer a hotel, so I checked in and scrubbed myself raw.

well, well, well
i didnt know where best to leave this message but figured you'd be clever enough to find it here on your latest entry... find it slightly disconcerting that anybody AND his brother can read it though! are you checking your emails too? anyway, in response to your question yes i will be around in manchester next year (providing the impending exams don't go as hideously as i fear they might (should be working now but im not)) why? will you be around? im guessing so... maybe i should listen to you more... anyway. cool if you will be around, exciting. have been reading all your entries, they make me laugh. some of the scenery looks amazing, am very jealous.
keep up the good peddling (If that's how you spell it?not a word i've used before...)i think about you ALMOST every day, which must be nice to know.
Take Care and try not to have to share puddle water with wild horses. feel free to bring one back for me though....? (a horse that is)

PS: linguistics is dead to me.... the new bain of my life is phonology. joy.
