we arrived in kuching on tuesday. since it was already late in the afternoon we decided to go to the supermarket to buy a few things and cook dinner. at store we noticed that people here don't seem to eat fruit and vegetables. there were no fruit at all and the vegetable selections was rather small (peppers, salad, carrots and tomatoes). we found out later, that there are people selling fresh produce on the weekend market. but that's not the only thing. people don't seem to cook as much here. there are so many food courts, hawkers and cheap restaurants that it's really not worth it. you save money when you don't cook yourself. seems hard to believe but it's true. because we like to cook though, we've cooked most nights so far. i have fallen in love with wraps. best food invention ever!!!
on wednesday we started exploring the city
on thursday we went to two museums. the museum of natural history which was extremely boring (wood, wood and more wood) and the sarawak ethnology museum (or something like that). the sarawak museum was really interesting. you could see all the animals that live here, learn about the different tribes, look at miniature longhouses and step into part of an actual longhouse. another thing the had on display was shell. did you know? shell (the oil guys) was founded here in sarawak! there was this guy who decided to set up a trading company here and export things including shells. that's where the name comes from. he found that there is a lot of oil here and consequently started shipping kerosene back to europe. interesting, isn't it? later that day it finally finally finally rained!! the pressure was killing us both for most of the day and we both felt so groggy
today, friday, joel and i got up real early and took a bus to kubahl national park aka. the jungle! :) oh yes, we went jungle trekking. since the park is on and around a mountain it was up and down up and down the whole time.. a bit tough at times especially considering the humidity and heat. i was drenched! yuck yuck. but it was soooo worth it because we went to this waterfall in the jungle aside from the fact that people left some of their garbage (morons!) you'd think that this was paradise! it is soooo beautiful! we ended up staying about 2 hours cause we both fell asleep on the rock. when we woke up we really had to get going.. not without taking a bath in one of the waterfall's pools though.. so beautfiul. mmm.. :) oh, before i forget: we saw a crab in one of the pools and something furry and a frog.. you hear the animals everywhere but you don't get to see them very often. and the ones you see the most are the insects and geckos. we saw the most beautiful red beetle. didn't manage to get a picture though.. we did however take pictures of a millipede. normally i would have screamed and run away but this millipede was beautiful! look at the pictures beneath to get a look. it had pink and yellow legs... how awesome is that?
and now? now i'm sitting here with the aircon going and clean again after a tough but very nice day. speaking of cleanliness.. i should probably mention this.. it's the coolest thing.. one of the showers here at the b&b is almost an outdoor shower.. half the wall is missing (on purpose) so there's nothing but a few metal rods. looove it! there's nothing like outdoor-showers! :) oh, one more thing: i have also fallen in love with ginger beer. it is delicious! you should try it! :)
alright, time for our daily movie.. ;) miss you tons. <3
