Cairns - Finally Settled

4 more weeks in Cairns. It was the time of my life. I started off really not liking Cairns but getting an apartment, a job and an awesome group of friends really helps that.
I decided to take the dish job. My first day was awful. The worst part of it all was putting on the prision like uniform. That's when I realized I needed to get my priorities in check and suck it up. I needed to make money and this uniform was going to get me there. My training was less than perfect but you know, you can't win 'em all and all the chef's were very willing to answer all the questions I had. I worked my butt off day in and day out and by the end of my 4 weeks of work, I was pretty damn swift. It's funny, all the dish crap I HATED to touch as a server (curdled bacon fat, all the crap in the drain, meat and more meat) just became part of me. I just needed to dive right in or it would be hell for every minute I was there. I made some good friends there including one, Kat, who might come to visit in Canada next year when she is travelling. My doors are always open. Emma was another backpacker steward who was awesome and although I only got to work with her twice, we had an laugh and managed to hang out a couple times as well.
The apartment was great. Obviously not the Hilton of apartments but it was great to have my stuff unpacked and I loved living with some great Canadians and 2 awesome locals. It was nice to just be able to invite people over, cook food and not have to worry about your stuff getting thrown away as it does in the hostel world.... Some highlights of the month.... Crystal Cascades: Went here twice to go cliff jumping. Awesome spot. A river with rapids, swimming holes and waterfalls. Gorgeous. Loved it. Partying in Cairns with some of the COOLEST people: It is a required stop for all backpackers so there is a place to party everyday of the week. Woolshed became the norm of sleeze and I ventured there too many times to count. There were about 10 of us (8 of us Canadian) who met at the YHA is Cairns in mid-June. We all were looking for work or hanging out in Cairns so we ended up having an awesome time. Cairns Reunion planned for T.O. June 2008. Ben and Barrett were 2 guys that were so awesome to me.... We hung out tons and tons. Ben is from Sheffield in England and was a Pharmacy manager before he came over. Barrett is a farm boy from Conquest, Saskachtewan who loves the tunes but not the goon. Harry Potter 5: Saw it twice. Best one by far, if you haven't seen it, get on it! Pierre: Yes, yes. A guy. He's Canadian, from Sudbury. One of the greatest people I've ever met. Kind heart and an amazing soul. Looks for the best in everything and everyone. Keeps me smiling day in and day out.
Gonna miss it all. Loved it more than I expected. Funny how things work out. More thumbnails ...
