Relaxing in a hammock was also the theme of most of the next day.
To break the terrible monotony, on Friday I rented a bike and went over to the next island, Don Khon. The Mekong here spreads out in width over a number of kilometres, maybe 14 in the wet season if I remember my trivia correctly. There were some great waterfalls, which must be even more impressive in the rainy season, and near deserted beaches nearby. A further bike ride away I met up with a few people and we hired a couple of boats to go dolphin spotting and glimpsed the Irrawaddy dolphins a few times from our boat and the shore. This also satisfied, temporarily, an urge to take a river trip, so I abandoned the idea of heading up to the next island of Don Khong by boat (proving quite difficult anyway as I was on my own and the price was per boat not per person) and decided to hightail it for Pakse by bus.
I enjoyed Don Det but others had spoken of it as a highlight, whereas I would say there's lot more to see and do in the north if time is not unlimited. However, I wouldn't have missed the Cambodia/Laos border crossing experience.
