First impressions: whilst I didn't have a very fixed image in my head of what the Galapagos would be like, a lot of the islands are surprisingly barren.

Or perhaps not, once you know that they are recently formed (in geographical/geological terms). On the ones where the volcanic eruptions look more recent some pioneer plants are just starting to grow, and over thousands of years' time these will form the base on which other plants and trees can grow and the islands will become greener.
