omg, i love florence!

there's this chick at work who i like (rare, true facts), and when i told her i had planned 3 days in venice, she said that'd be a bit useless and that my time would be better spent in florence...i haven't been to venice yet, but i am soooo glad i included florence :) (thanks, short but wise one)

i arrived early evening after a 34 hour trek from ithaki (2 boats and 2 trains), and went out for my first sunset at Ponte Vecchio (see picture)...my hotel is right at the Duomo so it's pretty easy to look up and figure out which way i need to go - at least so far it looks like an easy place to get your bearings

i was asked for directions by 2 italian men within my first few hours here, but unlike in Paris, this was utter crap...after i told them which way to go they asked me to go with them...they were OLD...va'fangulo!

i had already had itlian pizza, so for dinner i had tagliatelle al funghi porcini and a small bottle of rose (i know it's the scum of wine but i love the stuff), followed by gelato on the steps of the duomo....first day in italy an utter success!

full city tour and museums today...i saw the real David (there are copies all over the city) and the Birth of Venus (and before you bullock me for taking pictuers of the stuff, i didn't use a flash and had to be real sleathy)...i hate Michelangelo, by the way...bastard was a fucking mysogisnistic, self-involved prima donna

we had an awesome tour guide, an old english lady (quite past mad) who used to teach religion and philosophy, and i really think she hated both...she didn't just repeat facts, she put on voices to illustrate the unjust, called us children and darling, and yelled at random strangers to be quiet...i wish i was one of those rich bitches from 'those days' who had paid travelling companions, i so wanted to take her with me

when explaining how women were treated and thought of, she'd yell in a total head-mistress voice "because knowledge was only for MEN and women deserved NOTHING, all art was FOR MEN, FROM MEN...WOMEN were TOO STUPID to create or even TO THINK"

Florence was far beyond what i expected, a true gem of a place and one i would revisit in a heartbeat...anyone?

i certainly didn't see that one coming...i like to drink dopio macchiato - a double shot espresso with a bit of frothed milk...but do you think anyone in ITALY has heard of it? i've stopped attempting to order it, it's getting embarassing...they look at me like i'm asking for the horse head of the Corleone family instead of something they invented...what and the fuck?

i don't get bidets...are you meant to use your hands or just let the water do stuff?  are chicks meant to stradle it or sit on it, or does it depend on what was done 10 seconds earlier? so far i've just used it for my feet...yeah, i'm pure class

sit in a very touristy spot...you may drink, smoke, eat ice cream, or just do nothing, but you MUST be wearing sunglasses...look for people about to take pictures and wait for them to pose and fake smile...rate said pose/fake smile on a scale of "you're a dick" to "is that the best you've got"...it is important that you make no facial expressions, but if you do get busted, RUN AWAY

I'll go back to Florence wth you if you come to New Orleans with me.. all this talk of sitting around eating and people watching is making me remember how good New Orleans was for that
18 days to go til Athens!

vmad7 on

cassawesome on

Why am I not in your pocket right now? xx

nicky7a on

you NEED to be in greece with me, imagine all the awesome food we'd eat!!

MrsD on

I'll come with you next time you travel to Florence but ONLY if you ensure the crazy English lady will be our guide. LOL

I suspect that to your average Italian men single women out after dark are cheap and ripe for the picking. At least that was my experience with them. :(

Italian coffee is completely different from what other nations have made of it. And to be honest, I don't like Italian coffee at all.

nicky7a on

vienna has macchiato on all menus...so in the end i don't much like italian coffee either...florence, forget it, i change my mind...i want you to come with me to all the german speaking countries so you can translate menus for me

kevloid on

lol I don't get bidets either. to clean anything, the water pressure would have to be... definitely more than you'd wanna sit on...

ooo take me with you! I could be your kept smartass. :-D

nicky7a on

yes, i've always wanted a paid companion...i'd send you to the post office to buy stamps and to mail my souvenirs home, while i drank more Rose

Charon on

There should be a washcloth and a special towel to go with the bidet, non? I've only ever used these things for my feet too though, very practical in summer.

nicky7a on

there was a little towel...but...but...i just can't!!! and what, you let it dry and use it again? i prefer to it as a foot bath, i shall invent foot baths

Florence is definitely something I'd like to visit, lucky me it does not take me 34 hours to get there. How did you survive such a thing?! Question: do you still watch True blood while you're on the road? I saw 10 yesterday, 11 is sheduled for today and girl, that show is beyond EPIC!

nicky7a on

i haven't watched anything since i left on 6 august...i've been hearing bad reports about true blood...is sookies REALLY trusting bill again :(:(:(:(

Elke on

The thing with TB is, I so love the series and the world they have created, that I can ignore Sookie being dumb. Her scenes with Eric were amazing, up until the last episode. And Jessica just rocks my world. She and Pam both. But yes, Sookie was a pain in the ass, especially in the last epi. Honestly, some things in the finale disappointed me, mostly the Eric/Sookie/Bill stuff, but there were tons of other things to focus on which was okay.

nicky7a on

i don't care if sookie is dumb, i just dislike bill and want to see him sad...heehheee...i love the actor in real life but bill the character makes my skin crawl...the last i saw pam her skin was still falling off her face...so awesome
