I had a super day out today with two friends, Thomas (who owns a laundry and has a history of befriending and helping VSO volunteers) and his friend Nita, a medical student. After picking up my new fridge from the house of a departing volunteer, we went to the beach for the afternoon!

Baron Beach is about an hour's drive from Yogya, along some steep and winding roads. There are some interesting stony landscapes on high ground in the hills that lie between Yogya and the sea, as well as lots of small villages.

I always wonder at the way people can go about their tasks - all the villagers I see seem to have animals to tend to, or fuel to gather, or obligations to honour, and everything seems to happen without the need for arguments or long committee meetings...

Baron Beach has golden sand and a fine fleet of blue boats, with fishermen sharing their news and mending their nets. It stands on the estuary of a small river, which turns out into a long, narrow bay before it meets the sea.

At the end of some rickety wooden steps, a path runs up the cliff to the headland and further along the coast. It was grand to walk along in the hot sunshine looking out to sea, and I spotted some more men fishing from stout stumps of rock at the foot of the cliff.

There was another beach to visit before sunset, but before we left Baron Beach I had a nice paddle, and found some small caves that made the rock-face look like a hedgehog - I really liked that.

Then it was off to Kukup Beach nearby, which had an island featuring some very out-of-place development work! That aside, the beach was lovely, with many rock-pools to explore. That's all there is to say, really - I'll let the photos do the rest!
