We spent a few days in the city of Kofu getting psyched for our short foray into the Minami Alps (see separate entry) - stocking up on gas, trekking food etc once we'd tracked down the only, but excellent, outdoor shop called Elk on the outskirts of the city. Unfortunately the taxi fare out there practically doubled the cost of our trek goodies!
We then returned to Kofu after our trek and to the same hotel (where we'd left most of our belongings) for a few more days to relax, explore the city and the local area. Kofu's Maizuru Castle was well worth a visit and we really enjoyed the city walking tour too. We also did lots of house-keeping-type things like our laundry, catching up on emails and our blog. For the latter we had to become members of an Internet/comic/video store where you can hire out a booth for as long as you want (even sleep there overnight if you need to) where soft drinks are on-tap and you can completely loose yourself in the crazy world of Japanese comics
We'd forgotten to hand in our key at check-out at the Chita Guest Inn so one of our menial tasks was to post that back to Kyoto. In the post office, after a very awkward ten minutes trying to explain or demonstrate what we wanted to do to various staff members and then the security guard who got involved (using a drawing and the Chita Inn business card) we became painfully aware that we must be in the wrong place.... completely the wrong place.... a bank in fact. In true Japanese style the security guard was the epitome of politeness as he lead us down the street to the correct building, but we could see he was just gagging to laugh out loud!
Our sunny day trip by train to Fujiyoshida was great fun even though Mount Fuji only revealed herself as we were on our way back on the train to Kofu.
