Flag of New Zealand  , North Island,
Saturday, February 26, 2011

As we were whisked back to civilisation from our 4-day kayak trip down the Whanganui River, central North Island, we learned about the earthquake and horrific death-toll in Christchurch, South Island, currently estimated to be around 250 to 300 people.

We’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone for your emails, phone calls to my parents, and notes of concern, and sorry we’ve been incommunicado for the past few days. We were due to visit Christchurch in a few weeks time, but we have obviously changed those plans.

All flags across NZ are flying half-mast. The newspaper coverage has been harrowing to read. Here are a few local newspaper headlines and pictures, although no doubt there has been substantial coverage of the disaster back home.

There is a Red Cross earthquake appeal fund if you would like to donate to the rescue and relief effort:

P.S On route from Dunedin to Kaikoura we had to change buses in Christchurch (as all roads north lead this way). Oddly the bus change-over point was literally just off the CBD and we had enough time to have a quick walk round the block. I think the photos speak for themselves as to the power and impact of earthquakes.
