Where I stayed
Rumi Wasi Hostal
The young girl talked ten to the dozen in Sanish to try and sell us a trip to Colca canyon to see the condors the following day - it seemed pretty expensive (actually almost more than itwas from Areuipa!), so we looked into the options and decided to DIY it (what lonely plant suggested but what the hostal girl strongly advised us against!)
We gt up at 3.30am to gt the bus at 4.30am (the taxi the hostal girl said she had arranged didnt turn up) so we ran to the plaza, got a tuktuk and got on the bus just before it left 10 mins before schedule! - with some other crazy gringos who had decided to do the same! It was so bumpy at times, I was actually catapulted out of my seat, but we arrived a few hours later at Cruz del Condor... the indian women got straight into setting up ther stalls, we paid the boleta tourista and found ourselves a good spot to wait... it was freezing cold, as it always is in the mountains at night and early m,orning, so we had our layers on and our silly hats... and found a little bottle of rum and coke in our bag, so had a few swigs to warm us up - it did the trick! We waited for 2 hours and then some German tourists turned up and crowded around... and then teh condors came out... gliding gracefully on the thermals... the german tour guide spotted them first, so quite handy they had arrived... they flew about for 20 mins to half an hour... and then went back to their nests for a nap! They were huge, and really beautiful!... we went to get some avocado sndwiches...and find out about the bus back... and tons of tourists arrived for their 10 minute stop.... they made so much noise... but eventually the condors came back out (but it wasnt half asmagical and peaceful as the crowds around us oooohéd and ahhhhèd way too loud...
I am glad we got up early and saw them when there were not many people about...we jumped on a bus back at about 10ish... stopped in everty village collecting and dropping locals off... and we had a relaxing afternoon - evening... wandering around and exploring! We had an early night after another really ncie dinner... as we had been up since 3.30am and there had been some parade with drums and a band going past at midnight the ngiht before!!!!!
Back to ARequipa early the next morning...
