Nick and Chelsea set off on their journey up the coast with only simple plans in mind. The route they were taking would lead them through San Francisco, Vallejo (the location of a school Nick wanted to explore), and Napa Valley. After a few hours on the road Nick and Chelsea reached the city limits of San Francisco and with a quick glance through the AAA guide book they decided to check out Pier 39 by the San Francisco Bay. On the way to Pier 39 they were also able to take in a bit San Francisco's Chinatown and downtown areas. Upon their arrival to the water’s edge the couple was quite surprised at how large and popular Pier 39 turned out to be. After parking the car in a nearby garage they ventured over to the pier to see what made this a San Francisco hotspot. Their first entertainment came in the form of a giant skeleton pestering an Italian couple and a fantastically horrible mime whose only act was pointing at his tip jar. Nick and Chelsea also got a few good laughs out of the fearless birds who assaulted people for their food. A particularly bold seagull swooped down right in front of them and stole a hot dog right out of a young girls hand and proceeded to throw the wiener in the air and gobble it down in one piece.

After enjoying the sights on the sidewalk they finally ventured into the pier and were overwhelmed by the amount of people, restaurants, stores, and entertainers. Chelsea spent time milling around stores and spending money on pointless trinkets while Nick waited around and did some people watching. As dinnertime approached Nick and Chelsea were drawn into Pier Market, a restaurant that was omitting delicious seafood smells. The visit proved to be somewhat disconcerting because they had three different waitresses, none of which claimed to be there actual waitress, so they spent much of their time waiting. Eventually they finished at the restaurant and were ready to move on to the next city. On their way to the car, however they were distracted by a sign boasting about the sea lions of San Francisco Bay. As they made their way down the pier they were able follow the barking and stench of the sea lions. When they finally found the sea lions they were surprised to see so many of them crowded on to only a few small docks. It did not seem like a comfortable sleeping arrangement, but the loud, wet creatures did not seem to mind. After snapping some pictures, the two realized that they needed to hit the road if they wanted to see the Golden Gate Bridge in daylight.  They returned to the car and hit the road.  Delores guided them to the national icon, and they were nearing the destination just as the sun was setting.  They were looking forward to picturesque views from the bridge. Just as they crossed onto the brilliant orange landmark, it appeared as if they drove straight into a cloud.  Fog obstructed nearly all vision of the bridge.  The two laughed at the irony of the situation, and even managed to catch a couple of small glimpses of the massiveness of the bridge.

After enjoying their San Fransican experience, Nick and Chelsea were off to check out Touro University in Vallejo. Upon their arrival to the college campus they couldn’t help but feel as if they had ventured onto Alcatraz Island. This may have had something to do with the fact that they were so near Alcatraz or maybe because they arrived after dark, but either way the place gave them the creeps. Many of the buildings were boarded up and looked a bit haunted so the couple’s tour remained brief. Needless to say, Nick decided this was not the school for him. Upon their escape off the island they set their eyes toward the giants of northern California.
