With Phoenix behind them the pair began the drive to the Pacific coast. The drive was fairly uneventful, other than the air outside the car was hot enough to boil your eyeballs. Nick and Chelsea were in disbelief to hear a radio DJ say that it was cooling down to a cool 104 degrees at around 6'oclock in the evening. They also got a good laugh out of a sign that said "Arizona State Prison next right" with a sign below it that said “Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers!” Upon entering California they were greeted by winding roads, mountains, and more wind turbines. Their excitement grew as they drew nearer to their farthest destination from home. Racing the sun to Los Angeles prodded their excitement even more. Although they lost the race and entered L.A. in the dark it didn’t seem to matter because the sky was lit up as if it were mid-afternoon.

Turning off the interstate onto Hollywood Boulevard they encountered Batman and the Joker, Belle (from Beauty and the Beast), Pinocchio, a member of KISS, and whole host of other interesting characters surrounding the Chinese Palace Theater (the place where movie stars put their handprints). After cruising Hollywood Boulevard they turned onto Sunset Boulevard to take in the whole Hollywood experience. They spent some time driving through Beverly Hills trying to catch a glimpse of the glamorous lives of millionaires. This cruise around L.A. was enough for the two of them and Nick and Chels were ready to return to reality, so they had Delores guide them to Malibu beach.

Led seemingly to the middle of nowhere they found themselves winding down a road on the mountain of death. The decline was steep, the curves were sharp and numerous, and Chelsea was nauseous. The Blue Bu (Chelsea’s car) was also not feeling the greatest after this crazy ride. At the bottom of the hill there was some concern that the car had left the brake pads at the top of the mountain because their was a burning smell and some resistance to stop signs. The couple was ready to set up camp, but when they arrived at the campgrounds they were greeted by a closed gate that said “Gates open 9 a.m. – 10 p.m.”; it was now 10:28 p.m. With no place to go they drove through Malibu trying to find some accommodations. After some arguments and driving up and down the road about a dozen times they found a parking spot by the beach to call home. Chelsea and Nick were ready to sleep after their long afternoon of traveling so they settled into the car seats for a night of rest. They were dreaming of basking in the sun on the beach when they were awoken by a blinding light and a tapping sound. Malibu’s finest were staring in at them with angry flashlights. The local cops shooed them off the beach, so with no place to go they found a nice side street on which to park and rest.

As the sun rose on the couple it brought with it a new sense of hope for a good day on the beach after the harrowing ordeal the night before. The first order of business was a check-up for the Blue Bu. Luckily, a local mechanic was able to get the car in his shop early for an oil change and a brake check while the couple visited the beach. Chelsea and Nick were able to find a nice spot on Zuma beach were they were enchanted by the rolling waves, beautiful sand, and mountainous landscapes. While Chelsea napped Nick enjoyed a mini guitar sesh by the waves. It was a relief when they got a call from Cal, the mechanic, telling them that nothing was wrong with the brakes. As it turns out Nick and Chelsea had revealed themselves as tourists by relying too much on the brakes through the rolling hills of L.A. The morning on the Malibu beach had refreshed Nick and Chelsea so they were ready to continue their way up the California coast.
