We set off from La Paz to cross Lake Titicaca and the border into Peru. Lake Titicaca sits between Bolivia and Peru and is 3,812 meters above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world.
We were told that we would be getting a ferry across the lake. My English thinking led me to believe that it would be a ferry you would get back at home that the cars drive onto and off we go; I had obviously forgotten where we were! I don't know what had come over me. We disembark off the bus and we file onto a very small tin boat that carries us and a load of locals over the river. From the other side, we then watched while the bus was driven onto something I can only describe as a wooden raft and floated over to greet us. I think I just stood there with my mouth open the whole time, swallowing flies, thinking "please don't sink"!
Safe and sound, we re-boarded and set off for the border town of Bolivia and Peru; Copacabana. Yes that's right Copacabana. It hasn't moved from Rio. Apparently the name was originally Bolivian and they gave the beach and the name as a gift to the Brazilians. How you go about doing this is beyond me! After a short bus ride and a walk a few yards into Peru (these borders make me laugh!) we had made it. Peru here we come! We stayed in the small town of Puno near Lake Titicaca. What I didn't realise was just how big the lake is. We had driven 6 hours and we were still around the shores of it! It is about 190km by 80km and has a total of 42 islands dotted about in it. Tomorrow, we embark on a journey on the Lake to visit some of the islands and stay with the locals for the night. I don't really know what to expect - probably for the best. All I know is, it will be an adventure.
