Where I stayed
Had a really good couple of days in Hervey Bay and the weather has become almost Australian!
We hired bikes yesterday and went for a LLLOOOOONNNGGGG bike ride along Hervey Bay. Went right along the coast as far as we possible could before we ran out of path and then turned around. Neither Amy or I have ridden a bike, for an extended period, for a very long time, and it was safe to say we could feel the after effects this morning. My saddle was made from granite which meant I had to ride stood up the whole afternoon!
We cooked an Aussie BBQ last night in the nicest hostel we've been in so far. Today we got up very early and got picked up to get the ferry to Fraser Island. Its aboriginal name translates as 'paradise’, so you get an idea of what it’s like
Luckily, the weather was the best we’ve had the whole time we’ve been in Australia and we had a great day. The whole island is covered in rainforest and you need a 4WD car to get anywhere. We were in a 4WD coach that drove us all the way round the island and we properly explored and saw all the sights, including humpback whales, dingoes and a 75 mile beach!
We also had a joy-ride in a small plane which flew over the island, and we got to see everything, including tiger sharks and dolphins!
Amy cooked tea tonight, which was delicious, if a bit eventful.
We’re moving on to Yeppoon tomorrow, which is where my Auntie lives. It’s another 8 hours north, so the weather should get even better. (fingers crossed)
