A few miles before getting into Montgomery County a Harris (not Hazard) county constable flashed his lights for me to pull over. I did as I'd been taught and just sat in the car with my hands visible at all times and waited for him to come over. He didn't get out, just bellowed something at me on hi loud speaker. Of course I coulnd't understand what he was saying as I havn' quite tuned intot he Texas accent yet so he had to pull up beside me ask me to wind down my window and ask me using his normal voice to pulla little further to the left - not a great start.
The came the words I'd been expecting - licence and insurance please mamm.... thanks to Chris winding me up about US cops all I could think about was that my insurance was in the glove compartment and that in the US, the glove compartment is where most people keep their guns. Chris had warned me to always ask permission t ogo intoteh glove compartment in a situation like this to avoid being shot. I realise he was joking but at the time I found myself saying to the constable "I'm just goingin the glove compartment to get it - is that OK???" I swear he rolled his eyes at me.
Anyway turns out the insurance had expired on the document I had in the car (the updated document was still at home) so I was charged on for two violations and given a court date.
I've found out since that the defensive driving course is just an on-line multi choice type thing - sounds easy and I'll get off being fined for the insurance if I show them my up to date stuff. So all quite OK really.
