(Nicole) We did it! We trekked for 2 days, 1 night near Darjeeling and it was fantastic! We were timid about the physical stamina needed to complete this trek, but in the end, we finished the trek without any major problems except for some very, very sore legs. Now our legs are made of steel. The trek was extremely steep and I was panting like crazy. I was almost ready to give up and turn back, but Peter encouraged me and we trekked on. Although the physical strength is very important in trekking, I believe that our mental strength have to be just as strong.
The highlight of the trek was the possibility of seeing Mt. Everest, with her snow cap and awesome grandeur. We slept overnight in a cozy hut in Tonglu that sits ~3000 meters high and the next morning, we made ourselves wake up at 6am in the freezing weather to walk up to the hill top to take a peek at Mt. Everest. The night before, it was raining hard, so I was extremely glad because there's usually a rainbow and clear skies afterwards. I was concentrating so hard to get to the hilltop that I did not dare look to see the view; I crossed my fingers and prayed along the way. To our good fortune, it was cloudy as cloudy can be and we could not even see past our huts.
Peter was extremely disappointed and I did not know how to comfort him. I promised him we will try to see Mt. Everest again somehow in another trip since our time in India is up. He believed that this was a once in a lifetime moment and we passed it up. But I know that we will be back again if we really want to see the highest mountain in the world.
