The plans for food shopping have been pushed forward on account of crazy-crowds in the supermarkets. I need to be in Christchurch tomorrow to get my tooth fixed so plans are slightly off course. However, Stu is flying down from Wellington tonight so has offered to put me up at his mum’s house. This does mean that it’s stage one of meeting the parents!!!
Jen, Caz and I set off for a few hours shopping stopping at the famous ‘Cookie time’ on the way to look around the factory shop… much to the dislike of the sales woman. Ha, if looks could kill!
We shopped close to Christchurch, picking up a few last-minute presents for people and a few pieces of holiday clothes. Pre-Christmas sales meant there were some amazing bargains!
Jenny and Caz dropped me off at the airport at 5ish and I waited for Stuart’s flight to get in. Repaying the favour somewhat, but he knew I was waiting in arrivals so not really on par with his incredible gesture! When he arrives we head out to meet his older brother Andrew. He lived in a house in Christchurch until the earthquake, and the chimney fell down. It’s Stu’s first time back in Christchurch since the quake too, so Andrew took us on a damage-tiki-tour. It’s was so shocking. I’ve never seen quake damage before, roads lifted inches and foot bridges twisted over the river. The house was so bad. Completely abandoned. It was like driving through a ghost town, just a really ominous feel. The backpackers that Io, Helen and I were at back in August was completely taped off. A surprising amount of buildings were actually, but thinking about it - how does a city council even begin to repair damage that bad. To every house and public building? It must take years.
We reach Stu’s mum’s house where he’ll be staying over Christmas. She’s so lovely, greeting me with a big hug and welcoming me to her home. We head in and get some dinner and ice cream. It’s nice to meet Stu’s mum and get to know her. She’s been working teaching Art locally, so really interesting to talk to. Plus she works with a Welsh guy, so I teach her some Welsh phrases to shock him with! My explanation of pronunciation is pretty bad though. I feel for any Welsh teacher teaching third language! We all head off for bed. Stu and I plan to go out shopping in Christchurch after the dentist tomorrow, it’s so nice to get some more stolen time with him, baring in mind I wasn’t supposed to see him until Boxing day and I’ve seen him twice now!
