This morning mum discovered one of the local wineries was ‘her favourite’, Montana. So we pulled in to sample a few flavours. Whoa, expensive much?! It was 12 p/bottle at source! How does that work out when it’s 6 at home?! Hmmm, never mind. She was happy. I had a little play on the childrens play area outside and Helen looked on in dismay. Fun for all the family.  We set of through ‘Wine valley’ to the West coast, specifically Pancake Rocks.  We stopped for lunch at Kowhai point, another one for the tramping list. It was so tranquil. Right by the river, a small reserve of ‘native trees’ had been saved from the deforestation of the valley.  The river opening reminded me very much of ‘Into the Wild’.  Surrounded by huge mountains, replanted unfortunately with pine, but never the less, incredibly beautiful.  I still can’t get used to the native bird song, it’s strangely similar to mobile phones?!  A few miles down the road, the van slowed down and mum and Helen giggled shouting, “It’s a mirage! Take a photo”.  I could see a snowy range in the distance. Not overly impressive and certainly not worth stopping for! After a few minutes, I went to the front to see what the crazy women were babbling about, only to see a road full of cows! Told you uncle Anthony - they KNOW where I am.  After the cattle movers had skirted them around us, we were off, winding our way through incredibly deep valleys.  We finally swerved towards the coast.  The sun was low in the sky and gave some amazing pictures of sparkling waves set against dark rocks.  Tonight we are staying at Punakaiki beach camp.  Nice place, sparsely populated tonight but we’re very close to the beach and Pancake rocks.  Tempers are getting incredibly frayed so we have decided to start making our way to Christchurch tomorrow.
