We awoke as early as possible, between gunshots, motorbikes, buzzing fridges and nightmares over ‘Yokels’ it wasn’t the easiest night’s sleep!  Today we are venturing East to the longest place name. I’m going to attempt this… Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotomateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. I won’t accept spelling mistakes thank you.  Much to our amusement, the road sign directing up to the longest place name is just that! The journey is really bumpy today, and we are going through the back of beyond.  I will never complain about not having many amenities back home now.  This must be where the saying ‘two horse town’ comes from, except it’s sheep.  The only built up area we came across was Pongoaroa, built up about 30meteres around a crossroad.  Strange little place.  As our Campervan pulled out of the lay-by where we ate lunch, three locals, de-wellied outside the ’local store’, stared at us as we drove off. It was a bit of a Royston Vassey moment.   We resisted temptation to stop at the ‘Model railway & Cheese farm’, somehow, and were soon winding through the Rimutaka mountain range.  Such a stunning view my Mandarin lessons had to take a backseat.  I did get Helen to stop and I ran across the road for a better view… but it’s impossible.  My camera is apparently not as good as my eyes! They have some bush walks locally so somewhere that may be revisited… probably from the south though.  Wellington harbour appeared just before 5 o’clock and we found our camp with ease just North in Newlands, Capital Gateway park.  Nice place and good links into the city.  Tomorrow we’re going to have a day in Wellington before the ferry on Monday so we’ll be camping here again tomorrow. It’s definitely not because it’s the only campsite we’ve seen with a bar…
