We got to sleep in a bit in our hotel room after our long day of hiking, but by 11:00, we packed up the Jeep and headed to San Simeon to see the Hearst Castle. The drive there was beautiful. We followed the coast of California to the Hearst State Park Welcome center. We arrived just in time to catch our bus to the actual castle. We often talk about how blessed we are to wake up and do something new and amazing in a different city everyday. Some days we laugh about just how different the things we do from day to day really are. This particular day we laughed as we found ourselves on a tour bus to the Hearst Castle the day after we hiked Half-Dome in Yosemite. The Castle was incredible! We took a tour for first timers, and learned that construction on the Castle began 1919 and continued through 1947. The Estate was furnished with truckloads of art, antiques, and even whole ceilings that William Randolph Hearst acquired from great houses of Europe. The Estate has 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, two huge swimming pools, walkways and the world's largest private zoo. Everything was beautiful. The Castle has a view of the Ocean just past the Mountains. Rachel and Kim appreciated some of the famous artwork in the house, and Sandy loved the tidbits of media history through out the tour. The tour was over, we watched a National Geographic film about the Hearst Castle that explained some of what went into building the estate. It was nice to just sit in the Imax Theater and relax a bit, even if the film was a bit cheesy. From there, we jumped back in the Jeep and headed down to Malibu.
