Today we went on a drive to see the countryside around here.  We started off in the morning thinking our venture would be in vain as the fog was very thick, in fact I stopped specifically to take some photos of some horses grazing because it looked "atmospheric" in the fog.  As we progressed along the road toward Finley, we gradually out of fog into some watery sun.  The road runs along the route of the Mulwala irrigation Canal.  This is the canal into which they have engineer "siphons" to rout it under the Edwards River and a Creek close to Deniliquin.

We traveled through flat farming county of unknown crops and also quite a bit of scrubby country which did not look like it would support farming at all.  We came to Finley and there we took a look at the Lake and investigated the Railway Station, which has been restored but is not open to the public.  We visited a second hand shop to see what they had also Blow Hole

We then drove on down the Newell highway to Tocumwal.  We spent some time wandering around the town.  We investigated the goods yard - there is a daily goods train to here - We found that the Heritage Centre was no open, in fact did not look operational at all.  Also the shop supposedly containing the miniature railway was derelict.  We did find the railway bridge and took some photos, and walked across it.  Of course, this one is still in use, but it had obviously in the past been a lift bridge, but now the rail runs straight across, and so the lift section has not been in use for a long time.

We had lunch at picnic tables near the "Big Cod", and also saw the glider on the post - Tocumwal is known for its gliding activities.

We went to the Visitor Centre and found a computer bank, so I spent ½ hour doing emails, and answering all I could.  We asked about the blowhole and rocks and received a map to find them.  This feature is meant to be a pool of water which bubbles up through the rocks even during drought.  By following the map we eventually found it - interesting enough I guess, and perhaps Bob may have been tempted to do some cave diving, as it is meant to be 15 to 18 feet deep (5 metres) and there is talk of a cavern down there too Horses in the fog

We returned to town and photographed the glider and cod, bought petrol, and headed south to return to Deniliquin via Barmah.  The changes in the countryside as you drive around are very interesting and one of the major reasons for this trip - to see the countryside and get to know this country of ours, just a little.

Bahmah looked a pretty little town, but unfortunately by then I was in a hurry to get the washing off the line when I got back to the van.  I need not have bothered as it was almost as wet as it had been when I put it out on the line in the foggy morning.  A couple of dryer loads whilst I prepared potato patties and veggies for dinner, took care of the wet washing.
