A nice old man told me when to get off the bus from the train station, and directed me down towards hotels for Unawatuna beach, I get checked into a nice place which is clean, en-suite and even has wifi.  My first impression of the beach is just stunning this really is a paradise island, I enjoy being on the beach and having a wander round at a nice relaxed pace, I’ve missed the sea yet I was only landlocked for seven months.

I jumped a bus out to explore and got off a few miles down the road thinking I would walk back along the beach, after a while though I took to sunbathing only to have my camera stolen from inside my bag, I really wasn’t happy and although I think I know who stole it I couldn’t prove anything and spent the next few hours down at the police station.  I have to admit in India and Nepal I wouldn’t have went anywhere near the police but here they were really helpful which I was relieved about, unfortunately though it didn’t result in me getting my camera back so I’ll need to try and get another one.  I must admit I was fairly scunnered by the time I got back to the hotel, it’s the hassle it causes but thankfully I had downloaded my pictures only the previous day and I guess I can use my phone meanwhile.

I stay around here for a couple of days just hitting the beach, it’s very warm here around 30 degrees at least, I need to put a really high factor sun cream on before I can even think about crossing the door.  The beach here is kitted out for tourists with the sun beds and beach hut bars, restaurants etc. but that also brings the guys round offering massages etc. and I find myself getting frustrated when they approach you.  I lost my cool with one guy who made a beeline for me from away the other side of the beach, I saw him coming the whole way over and told him to about turn, in no uncertain terms.

I must admit I enjoy it here though, it really is stunning and most people very friendly and when you go out of the main beach you have the place to yourself, beautiful.  I’ve never seen so many palm trees, they’re extremely tall but I love especially the ones that lean towards the incredible Indian Ocean.  The waves here are mighty, they really thunder into the bay which sounds amazing, although the tide isn’t as apparent as at home, I find it hard to tell if the tide is coming or going.  I enjoy the sea and just sitting watching and listening, I find it really relaxing all in all, I’m very pleased I decided to come to Sri Lanka.
