Hola. Our two days in Santiago were a welcome rest after an 11 hour flight from Auckland. Things started off well as we were able to use our basic Spanish to get a bus from the airport to the city, and get tickets on the Metro to the stop closest to our hotel. It was a warm 21 degrees and very bright despite the smog around the hills. Unfortunately, I soon discovered I had been pick-pocketed on the crowded Metro - I put my wallet back in the front pocket of my jeans instead of my bag and in the squeeze on the train, someone had taken it. Bugger, but  on the bright side I didnīt  have much money in it and still had my credit card.

We soon got over it and headed into the city to check things out. The city was busy despite it being mid afternoon - plenty of people were in the pedestrian malls shopping and sitting in the shady spots in the plaza. Next day we enjoyed the park overlooking our hotel and saw a great 360 degree view with the Andes and hills surrounding the city. The city reminded us of some of the cities in Europe especially the Plaza which was a great people watching spot so we spent some time there seeing people take it easy, sell crafts, preach about god and play chess (just like Chrischurch really, but with a few hundred more people). We sampled some nice food and enjoyed a few beers and a cocktail and particularly liked the at the family run bar next to our Hotel - great service and even a piano man playing some tunes we knew. A great spot to get over our jet lag and plan our next leg to Columbia.
