After getting comfortable with the metro in Paris and studying the transit system throughout the rest of France, Mary and I decided it was time to take our first expedition. Our original intent was to hit Luxembourg first cause it's a small country, but I was sick for the first few days and couldn't travel far. Not that these trips were really any closer. Destination? North France. We chose to visit the following cities in this order: Rouen, Bayeux, Caen, and Pontersson, which connected to the city of Monte Saint Michel.
Rouen was our first destination; it was about a 1.5 hour train ride from Paris. Sites to see in this city included clouds of cathedrals and beautiful winding streets. The houses are all connected to each other, and you can tell which are originals because the wood at the top of them have curved in such a way that would inspire Tim Burton's creative process. The main attractions here that I discovered were: · Site in which Joan of Arc was burned at the stake: Now there is a modern church in the same place with a very long, simple, wooden cross that projects from within a small memorial garden. It was odd-looking in the middle of this medieval location; again something that made me think of a Tim Burton village. · The chamber that Joan of Arc was locked in before the burning: All that really remains is a plaque. · Notre Dame Cathedral: This is not the legendary Hunchback of Notre Dame cathedral site, which is in Paris. This is the Cathedral that the notorious Monet painted in many different forms that now hang in the Museum d'Orsay of Paris. Rouen has many bronze sculptures of Monet because he loved the city. He was so inspired by the personality of the town's architecture.
