So here we are, in one of the biggest cities in the world both by mass and population, famous for its party scene, farvellas (slums), the giant Christ statue and its crime rates. We arrived on  new years eve, so did not have much time to find the compulsory white outfits for the evening (white means good luck and prosperity for the year ahead when worn on new years eve) and to purchase our choice of poison for the party tonight!

Around 6 pm we took a metro to Copacabana beach (about 45 minutes away from where we were staying in Lapa) and found a spot on the already crowded beach, with stages and stalls set up for kilometers ahead. From Copacabana you can see the Christ Redeema (the giant Christ statue hovering above Rio, now one of the new 7 wonders of the world). At dark it was packed, millions of people across a few kilometers of beach, with several stages and things set up. The night was pretty crazy, running to ocean for a dip in the waves to cool off, buying caipirinas from the many little boys passing around and then as a highlight at midnight 15 minutes of amazing fireworks to top it off! We stayed till about 3 and then sort of got pushed back into the metro by the crowds. An awesome New Years Eve!

NYE was definitely my Rio highlight, the city was quite expensive and dirty, and although there were some nice areas to walk around most things were also not open and it was pouring with rain most days. Highlights were the famous Red stair case  (show- cased in several music video, amongst who U2 and snoop dog) as well the many other displays of street art and  a ride in the most dodgy little train that took us to Santa Teresa from where you had a nice view of the city and the farvellas.

From Rio we took a flight to Sao Paolo, where were to take a flight to Lima the next day but our travel luck ran out and it took us in stead 4 more airport, 3 days and a bulk of money we did not want to part with to get to Peru as the airline had  cancelled our reservation for some unknown reason and refused to sell our seats back to us from less than 6 x what we paid for it, so we had to fly back to Argentina to get there affordably L. Part of the adventure I guess ;)
