One of the highlights of our trip to Cumbria was coming across Hall Hills Farm quite by chance while driving in the hired car along the winding country lanes near Dalston. We thought we were getting lost because this place really is off the beaten track, but then we found the old stone buildings just by a quaint little stone bridge over the river (the river Roe, I think). We needed somewhere to stay for the few days we would be in the area and Hall Hills proved to be perfect.

It's a cluster of self-catering cottages recently built in converted 17th century stone barns, each with a private patio with uninterrupted views across the rolling cumbrian countryside. They've been given 4 and 5 stars and they really deserve it. The place is well-equipped with things like free broadband and satellite TV plus great kitchens and laundry facilities. We stocked up on supplies at Carlisle, which was only a 12-minute drive away.

We would highly recommend staying at Hall Hills Self-Catering.
