A long day between take off and finally getting into Bogota (13hrs) but I am finally here and it is as nice as I remember it.
There is the smell of recent rain but the sky is now clear and the air very crisp...something I am not used to!!! there is lots of tooting of of cars and traffic etc...my friend John collected me from the airport and whisked me away to my apartment which is in the poshest end of town, Park 93....nice one buddy!!! All the streets have trees on the islands and there is lovely big parks everywhere...and 100's of fantastic restaurants and walk ways! VERY cosmo!! ...and nothing like island living...lawn is still a novelty to me!!! :o)
Once I dropped everything off we went for a walk through the park to a great restaurant for dinner...my first spanish lessons...reading a menu...this is not for the tourist here it is all ONLY in Spanish...but as most people know I wont starve anywhere in the world and knew exactly what I was looking at :o) Dinner was great we then walked back and I crashed after a long and early start to my day!!!
Sorry I missed your call at Georgie's mum...have fun on your trip!
Today has been busy...some shopping...well only for small important things like groceries...a highlighter pen to highlight stuff in my lonely planet...but I window shopped alot!!...
John also gave me a great rundown on the Drug Cartels of the 80's and why things are soo differnt now...and also how the rich pay for the poors utility bills...a generalisation is that there are 6 neighbourhoods in a city.(suburbs)...#1being the poorest and #6 being the wealthiest....I'm in #6 so there must be a mistake!!!...anyway the people that own property in #6 pay the utility bills of 3 families in #1...in #5 they pay 2 bills...#4 pays one other bill and #2 pays 1/2 a utility bill in #1.
Anyway today was lovely and chilled...coffees on sidewalks...poking around foreign supermarkets...lunching at street cafes...working out a travel plan and generally acting like a native...except I can't speaka de language!!!.... I have had lessons all day and have managed to put together a few sentances. I love watching the people here... they are all talking a mile a minute, I can't understand it but it all sounds happy the Colombians are very friendly and welcoming!! Loving my first day in the big city!...
