We were up early to leave Arenas, a kind stray dog led us from our hostel all the way to the bus station which seemed like miles lugging our rediculously overweight bags. We were early and as usual paranoid about whether we were in the right place or it was really the right time. Finally are bus turned up and we were on the road, the journey was uneventful apart from one time when about 10000 sheep were suddenly in the road in front of us. They were being herded across the road by two horseman and several dogs. we finally got through and were in Puerto Natales before we knew it. We went straight from the bus to find another bus, only the offices in lonely planet all seemed to have changed or be shut. We finally found one that was open only to be told the only bus that day left at 7am, we were there on the wrong day cos 4 days a week there is an afternoon bus, so frustrating!!! However, despite this i was determined we were gonna have a gud day in Natales so we sorted a room, convieniently there was one next door to the tour office so it was fairly easy. We found a cute little cafe where we had coffee and gud hearty stew, much needed cos we hadnt had any brekkie and it was pretty chilly! Then after sending a few emails we did the must do for every holiday... had an ice cream and a walk down by the dock. It was so cold tho, i mean the fishing boats, the water and the distant snow caps were very pretty but it was freezing!! So we retired to a little cafe where we had amazing chocolaty hot chocolate and then moved to another one where we had a couple of local dark beers.. very nice tho!!!! Also played the card game we learnt crossing the salt flats which was suprisingly simple and addictive with just two of us playing. After a while we decided we better eat, we were in Patagonia proper now so it was time for some good old barbequed sheep. There was a asador next door so we went in, looked a little posh but never mind..... ordered a bottle of wine and two plates of sheep, and they were literally plates of sheep. Piled high we probably shared quarter of a lamb between us, a mix of huge succulent bits of lamb and crispy extremely tasty skin. We were very naughty and ordered a desert to follow, a white and dark chocolate mousse with white and dark layered chocolate liquer. All in all Peurto Natales was a very enjoyable stop. If a little unplanned!!!
