Anyone for some fast food?

Left as early as we could, didn´t see the point in hanging around...time to make a quick exit. Headed to the nearby...yeah right...bus station. Knew it would proabably be expensive, it was a luxury service....but just wanted to get out of the place. Bus station was lovely....with of course the obligatory armed guard on the door...we thought oh, oh. Cost us 600L, which is like $36...sounded a lot, specially when you think our accommodation cost 300L and we thought that was a lot....but hey it was worth it to escape San Pedro! The service did look very nice...i guess you get what you pay for? It actually had a cafe and seating area indoors and gates and queues and proper tickets desks...all very civillised. Enjoyed a coffee and then it was time to board. Our bags were labelled and taken off us. We were last to board, were unsure why, till we got on the bus! Oh my god...talk about getting what you pay for...we were sitting in first class...like first class on a plane...the front of the bus had fully reclining chairs...and so much leg room you could have done the flamenco! Oh well after San Pedro a bit of pampering would be well earned. It got better too....we got free food and drink...a nice sandwich, cake, fruit juice and water, blankets, pillows and even an english movie. What more could you want...and compared to the greyhound it is stupidly cheap and a million times better...amazing really - and so not what we expected.... Was a great journey....who needs chicken buses? (our budget does actually, but got to spash out occasionally, or thats what we keep telling ourselves.) At the bus station....we got a taxi....they actually gave us a moment too when we asked for one which was nice for a change. The journey was insane...the road went straight through the middle of a market, where there was barely room for people to walk, let alone two lanes of traffic. A lot of horn honking went on, a lot of weaving....how no-one gets killed i will never know! All i can say is im glad i didnt have to navigate that street with my rucksack....or i might not be here to tell the tale! After the driver had navigated through the hoards...the wheelbarrows full of stock and the stalls spreading into the street, he was actually able to make progress and we reached our destination. It actually looked quite nice, which was a relief after San Pedro. Checked in to a lovely little room, in a very clean place, with a central courtyard...it even had a private bathroom. Went to find food....but we had a shock awaiting us....Teguc (as it called by the locals) is basically a Coventry of 20 years ago. Dirty, smelly, badly needing repair everywhere...full of markets and i mean full and everywhere other building being a fast food joint. You must remember the days when fast food joints were cool...Macdonalds in its heyday...well its just like that here....they are all huge...and just like i rmember them. We tried to find an alternative but there was none. So we ended up in urger King...usually the best burgers....but they were pants....soggy and mushy...and not even hot. Oh well. They also did that bloated thing to your belly like macdonalds used to. Wandered...completely unimpressed...then headed back to our room...where i chilled with my ipod, and neil volunteered to go out into the chaos once more to find some money. ook him ages, but he returned with cash...now we could eat...god knows what though. Fancied a beer....but no where that looked even vagually normal to have a beer. Had to give up....nowhere to eat either...neil had found chinese early but neither of us was really hungry, so we ended up in pizza hut. Quite nice inside, but you really could have been anywhere in the world. Enjoyed watching the locals take their stall down outside the window....put it in a big pile and cover it in tarpaulins, fastened with saftey pin....clearly their stock means a lot to them here! On the walk back we were surprised to see every stall was the same, all the stock piled up and covered in taurpalin....seems wierd to me, but clearly its the way its done here! That done we went back, was still very early but nothing else to do...didnt feel safe wandering round in the dark. Coulnt even find a shop open to buy a drink. Read my book a while then went to bed, thirsty and a little disappointed....where have all the lovely places gone?
Next day was simply rubbish...i could lie but whats the point...cant all be a bed of roses right? We got up, had minging coffee in a minging coffee place...then Neil wanted to walk to the commercial district cause he had read it sounded nice in the book. I wasnt convinced but what else was i gonna do? We walked and we walked, through dirt and grime and smog, clambering over the pavements that were there one minute gone the next...mostly like walking an assualt course. It was hot and the smog killed my chest. We had no idea where we were, or where we were going, but Neil being Neil we had to find this place. Eventually exhauseted and smelly we found it....USAville. Honestly you felt like you had walked through a blackhole and ended up in some USA town. Huge fast food joints, hotels, billboards...big roads...its was amazing and not what we were expecting. There was only one thing to do...go eat in one. We went in churchs chicken, one we never tried in the USA. Was okay, got to watch Chelsea play Man U while we eat, even managed to see a goal...by some player we had never heard of...we are clearly out of touch. Then we headed back, found more shit along the way. I wasnt a happy bunny, i was exhausted and for what? I could have had a churchs chicked round the corner from the hotel!!! Wasted the rest of the day....no doubt we will have more fast food for dinner...then sit in our room again. Bring on South America
